FIDM Graduation Casino Day 2023
FIDM Graduation Casino Day: Los Angeles Event Photography Case Study
Graduation celebrations are filled with fast-moving moments that only happen once. For the FIDM Graduation Casino Day, Pro Video Foto provided professional event photography focused on the graduates, casino games, interactive attractions, and energy of the outdoor celebration.
Held at Grand Hope Park in Downtown Los Angeles, the event gave graduating students an opportunity to celebrate together through casino-style games, oversized challenges, inflatable attractions, food, and social activities.
Our assignment was to document the complete experience while allowing students to enjoy the celebration naturally.
Project Overview
Event: FIDM Graduation Casino Day
Location: Grand Hope Park, Downtown Los Angeles
Coverage: Professional event photography
Event type: College graduation celebration
Primary focus: Graduates, casino games, attractions, candid interactions, and the overall event environment
The event featured multiple activity areas operating at the same time. Students moved between casino tables, inflatable games, oversized challenges, and gathering spaces throughout the park.
This created an active environment where important moments could happen anywhere at any time.
The Coverage Challenge
The main challenge was creating a complete event story without focusing too heavily on one attraction.
Casino dealers were leading games while other students competed in physical challenges, played oversized table games, or spent time with classmates. Each area had its own energy and required a slightly different photography approach.
The final collection needed to show:
- The overall size and layout of the celebration
- Students actively participating in the attractions
- Genuine reactions around the casino tables
- The variety of entertainment available
- Social moments between graduates
- Event staff operating the activities
- Details that established the casino and graduation themes
Instead of photographing each activity only once, we returned to the busiest areas throughout the event. This allowed us to capture different groups, reactions, and stages of participation.
Our Event Photography Strategy
Establishing the Full Experience
We began with wider photographs showing the outdoor environment, activity zones, casino tables, and groups of students moving through the park.
These establishing images gave the gallery a sense of place and helped communicate the scale of the celebration. They were especially important because the event extended across several sections of Grand Hope Park.
Wide event photographs can be useful for future marketing because they immediately show potential students, organizers, and partners what the complete experience looked like.
Prioritizing Participation Over Equipment
Photographs of a completed setup are valuable, but the experience becomes more meaningful once guests begin interacting with it.
Our coverage focused on students playing casino games, reacting to wins and losses, competing in challenges, and encouraging their classmates. Rather than documenting empty attractions, we photographed the experiences those attractions created.
This made the final images feel active and gave viewers a better understanding of what it was like to attend the event.
Anticipating Candid Reactions
Casino tables naturally create moments of anticipation and celebration. We watched the flow of each game and positioned ourselves to capture expressions before, during, and immediately after each play.
The same approach was used around the inflatable attractions and oversized games. We looked for moments of concentration, competition, laughter, and surprise.
These candid photographs gave the gallery personality without requiring students to stop what they were doing and pose repeatedly.
Creating Visual Variety
A strong event gallery should not feel like the same photograph repeated with different people.
We created variety by alternating between:
- Wide views of the event
- Medium shots showing groups and activities
- Close photographs of reactions and interactions
- Images of students playing the games
- Details of cards, tables, attractions, and prizes
- Informal portraits of graduates and classmates
- Photographs showing the surrounding Downtown Los Angeles environment
This approach created a more complete collection that could be used across websites, social media, newsletters, presentations, and future event promotions.
Documenting a Casino-Themed Graduation Celebration
The casino theme gave the event a recognizable identity and provided several opportunities for energetic photography.
Students gathered around gaming tables to participate, watch their classmates, and interact with the dealers. The outdoor casino setup created a social environment where candid moments happened constantly.
Our photography documented both the visual theme and the people bringing it to life. The result was more than a collection of casino table photographs—it was a record of graduates celebrating an important milestone together.
Capturing Multiple Attractions Across the Park
Beyond the casino games, the celebration included inflatable challenges, oversized activities, competitive games, and open areas where students could gather.
Covering an event with multiple attractions requires awareness of the complete schedule and environment. Spending too much time in one location can mean missing important moments somewhere else.
We moved continuously between activity areas while monitoring where crowds and energy were developing. This helped ensure that the final gallery represented the entire event rather than only its most visible attraction.
The Final Image Collection
The completed photography told the story of the celebration from beginning to end.
It included the setting, entertainment, graduates, candid reactions, and smaller details that gave the event its personality. The gallery was designed to serve as both a record of the day and a collection of marketing content.
Graduation event photographs like these can be used for:
- College and university websites
- Student-life marketing
- Social media posts
- Graduation announcements
- Alumni communications
- Event-planning portfolios
- Sponsor and vendor recognition
- Promotion of future campus events
- Internal presentations and reports
By capturing the environment and the people experiencing it, the content remains useful well after the celebration ends.
